Pine Siskin Salmonellosis Outbreak, Winter 2021

Pine Siskins, our winter finches, are sadly falling prey to salmonella passed through bird feeders in the Western states, including here in California. Many wild birds already carry the bacteria in their gut, so increased congregation of pine siskins at shared feeders is thought to contribute to more outbreaks.

Platform feeders are thought to be extra troublesome because the design allows for bird droppings to collect where the birds are also expected to feed. Platform feeders should be removed until late Spring once pine siskins have migrated north.

Salmonella poisoning makes pine siskins' feathers appear fluffed, messy, eyes are sunken, and they act lethargic. A healthy pine siskin looks sleek, and ready for migration. The Siskin pictured above is very sleek and healthy, ready for migration!

For general feeder care, regular cleaning and daily-sized feed amounts can help our winged friends. Recommended cleaning for bird feeders includes soaking feeders in a 10% bleach solution, rinsing and allowing them to dry .
